Bhishma Pitamah, one of the central figures of the Hindu epic, Mahabharata, is a character that is both revered and feared. Known for his unflinching loyalty to his family, his wisdom, and his unwavering commitment to his principles, Bhishma is an iconic figure in Indian mythology.

Early Life and Family 

Bhishma was born as Devavrata, the son of King Shantanu and the goddess Ganga. He was born to a noble and powerful family, and from a young age, he showed exceptional intelligence and physical prowess. Bhishma was trained in various arts and sciences, and he became a skilled warrior and diplomat.

Bhishma's loyalty to his family was put to the test when his father, King Shantanu, fell in love with a fisherman's daughter named Satyavati. When the fisherman refused to allow his daughter to marry the king unless their children were made heirs to the throne, Bhishma made a vow of celibacy, renouncing his claim to the throne and promising to serve his family for life.

Bhishma's Role in the Mahabharata Bhishma played a key role in the Mahabharata, where he served as the chief advisor and warrior of the Kuru family. He was respected and feared by both his allies and his enemies, and his strategic brilliance and military prowess were instrumental in many of the battles that were fought during the epic.

Bhishma was also known for his wisdom and his deep understanding of dharma, or righteous living. He was a mentor and teacher to many of the characters in the Mahabharata, including the Kauravas and Pandavas, and his guidance was instrumental in shaping their actions and decisions.
